District Updates on Tennis Courts, Site Restructuring, and Facility Maintenance
The board discussed upcoming construction projects and necessary maintenance within the district. The tennis court project is nearing completion, with courts ready for use, though temporary occupancy is in place due to minor building unfinished details. Restructuring work at four sites (Weston, Parish, GIS, and Maxwell) is expected to mobilize in early August, with exterior work at Maxwell being the most visible to the community. A chiller at the junior high school, opened in 2010, had to be replaced due to failure, with installation beginning this week. Ongoing maintenance at Maxwell includes replacing one of two pumps in the lift station, which is not expected to impact the start of school. Additionally, district staff undertook painting projects across eight schools, including the high school cafeteria, resulting in cost savings and improved aesthetics. A revision to the old tennis courts into parking, adding approximately 175 spots, is planned and will go before the Building Code Authority (BCA). This initiative is partly in response to the city's request for additional parking following the construction of the new performing arts center.
Board Approves Policy Updates, Surplus Property Disposal, and Student Fees
The board held a second reading and approved four board policy recommendations: C175 (Student Attendance, Academic Engagement, Truancy Prevention), C525 (Medical Needs at School), F101 (Budget Adoption and Implementation), and F125 (Purchasing Procedures and Capital Assets). Minor changes were made to each policy. Additionally, the board considered and approved the disposal of surplus property from the Maxwell storage as part of a merger. Due to Indiana law requiring auctions unless the cost of the auction exceeds the item's value, and an assessment indicating low auction value but salvage potential, the board approved taking items for salvage to recover scrap value, estimated at $400-$700, avoiding auction costs of $200-$300. The board also discussed a proposal to reintroduce student fees for specialized courses (arts, technology, CTE, dual credit) to recover costs of consumable items, with proposed fees ranging from $10-$25 per semester, and a $5 fee for junior high. Fees for HC3 classes are set by HC3 and are higher. The board debated the necessity and impact of these fees, with some members expressing concern about charging students and advocating for absorbing costs, while others highlighted the need to fund specialized programs and prevent teachers from incurring personal expenses. Ultimately, the student fees were approved as presented.
Health Services Report Shows Improved Student Return-to-Class Rate
The board reviewed the Health Services report for the year, noting a significant increase in clinic visits where students returned to class ready to learn, rising from 85% last year to 90.99% this year. Total clinic visits for the year were 22,680. The report detailed 14 EMS calls, with 11 students transported to the hospital. The top reason for clinic visits, excluding incontinence, was restroom use, significantly impacting health assistant time. The report also noted 208 medications administered, primarily behavioral medications, along with daily doses, insulin, and pre-meal medications. A positive development highlighted was that two current health assistants are certified clinical medical assistants, with four more working towards certification with grant-funded support. The health services department expressed gratitude for the opportunity to support student health, families, and emergency response.
District Renews Partnerships for Dual Credit Courses, Approves IU Indianapolis Seamless Admission Program
The board considered the renewal of several Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with partner colleges and universities to continue offering dual credit and AP courses. No changes were proposed for the existing MOUs, and approval was sought to renew them for the upcoming academic year. The board also reviewed and approved an agreement with IU Indianapolis for their 'seamless admission' program for high school students, designed to streamline the application process and provide dedicated counselors. This program is expected to benefit students pursuing higher education at IU Indianapolis, particularly first-generation college students. Both the MOUs and the IU Indianapolis agreement were approved as presented.
Spring Coaches Reviewed, Classified Staff Compensation Adjusted
The board reviewed the Spring 2026 coach reviews and out-of-state coaching recommendations, presented as a first reading.
