Updates Provided on Ken and BP Property Redevelopment Efforts
Mayor Molnar and Director Gdetti provided an update on the dilapidated Ken & BP properties. The Ken property is undergoing a foreclosure process, with multiple failed sales at sheriff and private auctions. There is potential for a responsible transfer of the property. Simultaneously, the city is pursuing demolition of the Ken building as a nuisance. For the BP building, 7-Eleven filed for a preliminary injunction to stop demolition, leading to a settlement agreement that was not complied with. The company has applied for a conditional zoning variance, and the planning commission is reviewing traffic studies and other information. A court hearing is scheduled for September 14th.
City Safety Forces Commended for Life-Saving Actions
Multiple instances of commendations and thanks were presented for the city's safety forces. Officer Chad Redburn was recognized for his work in investigating a stolen vehicle that led to the arrest of a predator, uncovering child sex abuse material, cruelty to a dog, and homemade explosives. Dispatcher Elias was praised for her calm and quick thinking in guiding a mother through CPR to save her drowning son. Fire medics Maloney and Alders, along with dispatcher Slazak, were thanked for their response to a medical emergency. Police officer Quintrell received commendation for his life-saving efforts during a pedestrian versus vehicle crash in heavy rain. Paramedics Anthony, Wiki, and Matthew Snowden were hailed as heroes for saving a man's life after a heart attack.
City Joins Discount Drug Mart Opioid Settlement
Resolution 41 was adopted, authorizing the mayor to enter into the Discount Drug Mart settlement as part of the national opioid litigation. Director Gdetti stated that this participation is consistent with previous council decisions and the One Ohio Memorandum of Understanding. The settlement amount for the city is approximately $5,000, with a deadline of August 1st to notify participation. This is similar to other opioid settlement agreements previously approved by the council.
Council Ratifies Police Union Contracts for 2026-2028
The council ratified collective bargaining agreements with the Fraternal Order of Police for both the dispatching unit and the police patrol officer and sergeant units. These agreements cover the years 2026, 2027, and 2028. Director Gdetti highlighted that negotiations are long and difficult but expressed satisfaction with the finalized agreements. Chief Yakapovich thanked council for ratifying the contracts and welcomed Bruce Genevies back as a part-time dispatcher.
City Council Members No Longer Eligible for City Healthcare Plan
Ordinance 43 was passed, amending city ordinances to remove the eligibility of city council members to participate in the city's employee healthcare plan. This change will be effective for subsequently elected council members, not affecting current terms. Council members expressed that while the eligibility was a good idea in 2012, times have changed and it is now considered too significant a perk for council.
