Molen Police Department Graduates Second Spanish Language Academy Class
The Molen Police Department concluded its second Spanish Police Academy, a six-week, fully Spanish language immersion program. Ten graduates completed the program, which covered police functions, department structure, language barriers, public trust, and included specialized training on the SWAT team, canines (full service, therapy, and electronic scent detection dogs), and the investigations division. The program aims to build trust and improve communication with the Spanish-speaking community. Similar to the English version offered for over 30 years, this program is considered a success, with plans to continue and potentially expand it.
Q2 Report Highlights Awards, Infrastructure Improvements, and Community Engagement
The Fiscal Year 2026, Quarter 2 report highlighted several achievements, including the city receiving an award from Marcato for supporting them since inception. The sister city visited in April, and Alderperson Silus held a successful first ward meeting. The finance department received the 'triple crown' award for its 2024 financial reports, a rare achievement recognized in North America. Finance operations have successfully transitioned to the new city hall, leading to increased public engagement. The Build Molen project is progressing, with a final report being prepared. The library system celebrated its 5 millionth patron. Riverside Park Cemetery's paving is complete, and Mechanis Park has a new playground. Chief G launched a successful 'Purposeful Policing' initiative. Bush Construction was retained as the construction manager at risk for the new central fire station, with demolition of Seventh Street properties nearing completion. Fire Station #2 was renovated, serving as a positive example of reusing an existing building. The Utilities department achieved success in state and national 'Top Ops' competitions and meter challenges.
Resident Calls for Improved Pedestrian and Bike Access, Shade Along John Deere Road
During public comment, a resident expressed concerns about pedestrian and bike access and shade along John Deere Road, particularly in the areas near Culver's, Starbucks, and the fire station, and across from the car dealership towards Walmart. The resident noted intense heat, lack of sidewalk access, and poor bike access at the intersection when crossing John Deere Road. They requested consideration for shade structures over pedestrian crosswalks due to significant temperature differences and the potential for heat emergencies.
Gas Stations Permitted as Package Liquor Facilities with Council Approval
An ordinance was passed to amend Chapter 4, alcoholic liquor, of the Moling Code of Ordinances, specifically Article 3, Division 3, Section 4-3304 concerning Class C package sales. The amendment repeals and reenacts a subsection to allow an exception for vehicular fuel stations to operate as package liquor facilities. This revision clarifies that only actual gas stations, not businesses with EV charging stations, are eligible. Such facilities can now operate within 100 feet of another package liquor facility, but any license granted under this exception requires a vote of the city council. This change was influenced by public comment from Alderperson Timian.
