Montclair Grid Reliability Exceeds Southern California Average, Edison Reports
Mark Cloud from Edison International presented a reliability report for the city of Montclair. The report indicated that Montclair's grid reliability is stronger than the system average in Southern California Edison's territory. The report analyzed outage frequency, duration, and short outages. For 2025, Montclair's System Average Interruption Duration Index (SAIDI) score was 90.7, significantly better than the system average of 545. The primary cause of outages in Montclair in 2025 was equipment failure, typically attributed to Edison's upgrades or unexpected grid events. Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS) outages are not significantly impacting Montclair due to its location in an urban pocket with lower wildfire risk. Edison is working on improving grid reliability through upgrades and is managing increased electricity demand from EVs and battery-operated buildings by building infrastructure as quickly as possible, though regulatory hurdles in California impede faster construction. Edison supports Proposition 45 in November, which aims to reform SQIA application timelines. They are also investing in fireproofing the grid, especially in high and medium fire risk areas, which has contributed to higher electricity bills. Capital improvement projects for Montclair are focused on reliability upgrades. Edison also provided information on circuit maps and customer distribution per circuit to help emergency responders.
Montclair City Council Approves Consent Calendar Items, Discusses Economic Study and Training Contracts
