Westmont Celebrates Successful 'Taste of Westmont', Updates on Community Events, Infrastructure, and Historical Society

Mayor Tom Smolich provided a recap of the 'Taste of Westmont' event, describing it as one of the best ever held, with unprecedented attendance in downtown Westmont. He thanked the village board for their support, which contributed to a remarkable community event that was enjoyed by families and resulted in zero complaints. Special Events is already planning for next year's event, with hopes to continue featuring significant musical acts. Village Clerk Simski provided an update on the annual Westmont Community Garage Sales, scheduled for August 7th, 8th, and 9th, with details available on the village website. Trustee Johanna Guzzo announced the next Fire Public Safety Committee meeting on November 12th and noted that Kids Safety Camp classes are full. Trustee Scales (absent) provided information on the next Community Development Committee meeting on September 17th, highlighting the permit fee waiver program for online express permits from September 1st to October 31st, offering free permits to applicants. Trustee Perilli (absent) reported that the new water tower logo painting began that day, with adjustments being made to the positioning. Updates on construction projects are available on the village website, and the next Public Works Committee meeting is scheduled for August 20th. Trustee Plowman announced the next Police Public Safety Committee meeting on August 6th, that registration for the Citizens Police Academy is open, and that the Police Department National Night Out is on August 4th, described as an annual community-building event promoting positive partnerships between law enforcement and the community. He also mentioned the Lions Club's successful corn sales during Taste of Westmont and that the Westmont Historical Society is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a murder mystery dinner on October 10th, urging residents to visit the Drake House museum. Trustee Barker reported on the Administration Finance Committee meeting, which discussed establishing a new proclamation policy requiring a connection to a Westmont event or resident/business, and reviewed the 2027 calendar. Updates were also given on the Izakaya Toy Tokyo mural project for the old China Chef building, and TIF designations/relocation grants for South Central areas. Cruising Nights every Thursday on Cass Avenue and concerts in the park were promoted, including a performance by Industrial Drive on August 12th. Movies Under the Stars will feature 'Air Bud' on August 7th. Trustee Barker also mentioned the next Environmental Improvement Committee meeting on August 3rd and an electronics recycling event on August 29th, with some items requiring a fee. The Vision and Vibe Fest is scheduled for September 12th and 13th in Veterans Park, celebrating arts and music.
